Making friends…

26 05 2009

I have a feeling that things are changing for me here in Canberra. Little by little I am settling in and feeling more like this is my home. Since my little whine on the weekend…

  • On Saturday night we met up with a blogger, his girlfriend and a couple of their friends to share an amazing meal at Rasa Sayang in Dickson. It was great to share a lovely meal and meet some new people in a restaurant we could walk to from home.
  • Afterwards Mick and I shared some drinks and came home sufficiently tipsy. He even let me drink a glass of wine in bed. Lashed I tell you.
  • After a long period of feeling out of sorts at work I feel like things are looking up and I feel motivated. I hate feeling unmotivated at work – it’s so  DEmotivating.
  • I discovered all sorts of lovely people who are Canberra bloggers/tweeters/handmade marketers who were at the Handmade Markets and I have lots of new reading material in my bloglines. Because I really need to spend more time on the innernet…
  • I actually won the lucky door prize at the markets. I never win shit! Not that it’s shit…. it’s very lovely.
  • Enny and I are going to brunch this weekend at this lovely place. Brunch with a real life friend who I met on the internets!
  • Gym friend said she will call me about going for drink.

Things are starting to look up…

PRON, Pot, Politicians and Roundabouts.

7 11 2008

Dudes. I know. It’s been ages. I might as well have gone and fallen down the loo I have been gone that long.

I’ve got SO much to tell you (all three of you. I think I have three readers left) so…

Firstly – Sorry I’ve been a slack old tart… there’s reasons.

Secondly – USA – Well done Toots! I’m so very proud. It’s exciting isn’t it. I feel all… overwhelmed and stuff. I feel like even though we couldn’t vote here in Australia, you voted for us too.

Thirdly (this number business is getting awkward) – Remember when I had to call time out because there was something that I wanted to write about, but I couldn’t and that was pretty much like a billion years ago?
Dudes. I moved to Canberra! *waits patiently whilst you all go Google “Canberra” but decides to give you a link because I am nice and stuff*.

So, yes. Canberra is in fact the capital of Australia. Yes. Neither Sydney or Melbourne are the capitals.

Canberra is a planned city, a lot of people have told me that it reminds me of being in Washington, though I have not been there so I can’t comment.

I was born in Canberra.

Mick lives in Canberra.

Mick and I now live together in Canberra.

People had about 2 reactions when I told them I was moving to Canberra “Awesome” (because they knew how hard a long-distance relationship was getting after 18 months) or “Why the fuck are you moving to Canberra?” – You may ask yourself, “why are these h8ters h8ating on Canberra? What the fuck is their problem with Canberra?”  – basically… Canberra is known for the following:

Porn, Fireworks, Pot, Politicians and Roundabouts

The first two you can purchase legally here, the second you can possess a certain amount here, as the capital of Australia the Prime Minister lives here and parliament sites here and… as for the roundabouts… I seem to remember something from school that Canberra was designed on a circular pattern rather than a grid like most cities *leaves to Google roundabouts and Canberra*. Ok. That could have been a complete lie that Mr Johnson told us in year 6. But I did discover that even though most people complain about the roundabouts, some people LOVA them, maybe just a little too much.

The other thing about Canberra is that people think it’s boring. Well, yes. I will concede that nightlife wise it can’t live up to the wonders of Sydney or Melbourne, but in Canberra’s defence it really helps if you find a local to show you around.

I am really enjoying the lifestyle change. It sometimes used to take me almost 45 minutes to drive 4 kilometres home in Sydney and at least 6 times a week I had to drive in heavy traffic. I think I have been stuck in traffic here about 4 times in the past 4 weeks and the longest period was about ten minutes. Thank god.

I looked for a job for ages, I went to interviews, registered with agencies (most of you suck…) and said no to totally inappropriate potential roles. All the while, I was frustrated and really, really sick with tonsillitis and poor Mick had to deal with me…..  but I finally found the perfect one doing the same thing I was doing before (fannying about with bits of paper and waffling on to clients over coffee) for the same company.

Murphy’s Law ey?

Even better, my friend who I replaced, transferred to Brisbane with our company and Mick and I took over the lease on her house which is quite close to the city and in one of the older suburbs but a newer house.

We have spare rooms! We have a garden! I am getting a kitty! We even planted a vege patch with tomatoes, rocket, lettuce, habenero chilli’s, beets, shallots, coriander, parsley and basil. We are so domesticated ploise. We went for a walk the other day and saw about 15 kangaroos NEAR OUR HOUSE. Apparently you will see them in your front yard some mornings.

The only downside about living in the bush capital is sometimes nature is a little too rampant for my liking… I keep seeing spiders. Like, in the house… gah. Gross. Yesterday I had to kill one, because omg, imagine if I left the room and then it got into my clothes or my bed! So I killed it with my slipper and then waited until Mick got home so he could take it away for me.

Just one more reason to love him.

MWAH xxx

PEEESS – On the tonsils front, I KEEP getting it. I was sick as a dog with it the week after I got here. Like over 24 hours of fever – my muscles ached for a day or two after as I shivered so much. I went and saw my family Doctor (the same one that brought me into this world  – bless) and he sent me off for blood tests and throat swabs and gave me a referral to an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist. Let’s hope they vote to rip those fuckers out. Errr. Just realised you pretty much all told me to demand all of this months ago.

And forgive me again for not posting, or not talking to you much, or not reading your blogs or not commenting… I’ve been sick/busy/tired….

FECK it. Bring on 2009. Does anyone else feel that 2008 in general, has been kind of suckful?

As D:REAM would say…

PEEESSESS… I touched his hand you know, the lead singer of D:REAM. At their concert. Squeeee.

PEEESSESSESS… Sorry about the random ramblings in this post, I told you I had a lot to tell you… or sumpy.

**Edit** – I just watched that video and he dances like… an absolute dick. Still. I love it.
