As more than half of my readers are not Australian this may be a little hard to grasp, but basically, we’ve got a pretty rubbish anthem.
No one can ever remember anything beyond the second verse (and who knew there were other verses?! ) and no one is really sure what “girt by sea” means.
Personally I remember when it wasn’t our anthem, in Year One we actually stood to attention to “God Save the Queen” but then the Labor government sneakily gave us this new one or something and then let the Unions run the country to ruin or sumpy. I am not sure, but I know that Grandma and Grandpa are still talking about it.
So what I want you to do… is watch this video…. It’s Jimmy Barnes and like most Australia “Icons” Jimmy actually hails from another country (Olivia, The Bee Gees, Mel Gibson, Crowded House and Russell Crowe were all born in other countries did you know?). So Jimmy is Scottish by birth, and he likes to really scream a lot. I quite like to sing along to Jimmy when I have had a few wines.

I happen to love our Australian anthem and still remember every word to it (we were taught in primary school and had to sing it once a week at assembly). Take pride, young lady! I look forward to hearing it at the Olympics.

I remember our primary school was very forward thinking and we sang Advance Australia Fair before it was even the anthem.
